Google My Business Updates & Their Impact On Local SEO

No doubt 2016 has been a year for the books and we’re only half way through! Google has implemented huge changes recently that are affecting a storefront’s organic and local search results in a number of ways. Here are the changes Google has implemented, how they will affect your local business, and what to expect in the future.

GMB Adds Email Verification, Local Listing Managers Rejoice!

Google has finally released a new update for Google My Business: A business manager or owner can now verify their Google Local (maps) listing via email! This long-awaited new feature eliminates the daunting task of waiting for a phone call or snail mail postcard (which occasionally was lost in the mail for weeks). The old ways were extremely frustrating as the verification process would take long periods of time (or sometimes never show up) and by then the employees would consider it junk mail and trash it, which could result in a major loss in foot traffic and revenue. Also, any store that uses a phone directory has been unable to verify at all! With local SEO and search becoming more crucial in this mobile world of ours, this is a big win for local listing managers that can’t wait to get their pages up and competing against other local businesses.

How It Works

Google automatically selects the email address to send the verification email through by using its own algorithm that scrapes the email from the associated website on the specific Google business listing you are trying to claim. Google will open that page and typically use the one listed on the “Contact Us” page or one listed in the footer. Google then sends the verification email over after confirmation of the email address.

This new feature further illustrates Google’s focus on finally helping businesses clean up and manage their business listings.  However, it can still be complex and time-consuming.
