Oh No! The social media giant Facebook has changed! Not to worry, this does not mean businesses have to change their entire social media strategies because Facebook did away with “Check-ins”, but did they really?

A couple of weeks ago Facebook was said to change some key features of its platform. Some of the changes made were page privacy, ads to target interests, location tags (Location tagging means that people can tag statuses, pictures, and people with their exact location and they do not have to be on a mobile device.) and recommendations on place pages. Rumors were that Facebook was also removing check-ins and places, but it seems that they haven’t done either yet.

Location tagging can be great news for SMBs. Not only will people see that their friends are checked in at an establishment, but now the picture that was taken at the location can be linked to the Facebook Places page (Facebook Places is a section on Facebook that allows companies to have their information listed on a page created specially for that company).

This creates a tagging history for Facebook Places. If a picture or status stays tagged with a location, then anyone who sees that picture or status after its original posting can be linked to the locations page. This can really boast a company’s online reputation or it could damage it. If a company is actively using an online reputation management strategy that includes social media monitoring, then there should be no un-resolved mentions and therefore people will see only the best that company has to offer when people are linked back to that locations Place page.

The next change is Facebook recommendations!!! Look out Yelp and Trip advisor. Facebook now offers recommendations for businesses with Place pages.

This is a screen shot of Facebook prompting me to recommend a restaurant.

This is an interesting approach with the word “recommendations”, which is simply implying positive content, unlike the word reviews. This is a great strategy to drive online reputation management to a new level. What does this mean for your business? That its online reputation just became more susceptible to damage by negative reviews. With “90% of online consumers trusting recommendations from people they know” (according to BazaarVoice) and Facebook now prompting users to recommend a business, this takes online review management to a whole new level. Not only do businesses have to worry about what is being said on the top review sites, but now they have to worry about what is happening on Facebook.

Facebook recommendations should already be a part of your places page. Just like “check ins,” is part of the page so there is no complex integration, and people should be able to start recommending the establishment right away. All the business needs to do is start monitoring its Facebook page by using a third party service like chatmeter.com, to ensure that their reputation online is congruent with the brand image.

For the companies that have a fan page and a place page, there is a way to merge these two and have one central page to communicate with all of their fans and Facebook users. The Chatmeter Team published a blog about this very topic to help with the merging process of place and fan pages.

Trends show that before people decide where they are going to eat, shop, or who will mow their lawns, they are checking out online reviews including Facebook. If a company has a lot of negative reviews and is not using some kind of online review management, social media monitoring or reputation management service, it will start to notice a drop in business. For more information on services that include social media monitoring, online review management, and online reputation management check out chatmeter.com.

In my research I came up with these questions:

Is Facebook going to have its very own ranking algorithm? It seems to me that it may be setting up for some type of ranking system among businesses or locations.

If a business has a bunch of tags that link back to its page, can it make its Facebook page more valuable? I hope that these questions will be answered in the near future.

Google is taking SMBs back to school with “Learn with Google”. Learn with Google is Google’s new tool to teach SMBs to start their business online.

Google has put training material together with YouTube videos and work sheets to teach SMBs how to establish their online reputation. It goes through all the necessary steps from planning an online marketing strategy, to executing the contents of that strategy, and even tracking the results to see if that strategy is working. I believe this is a great tool for SMBs which know that they need an online reputation but are not sure where to start.

They do a good job touching on a lot of the online marketing concepts but don’t really dive into any of them, except advertising where they teach you all about the importance of adwords and how to use adwords. I would have liked to have seen more in-depth information about email marketing, social media marketing, search engine optimization, and online review management (which they didn’t touch on at all).

What they did teach were the fundamentals of having an online reputation and not necessarily how to manage that reputation. To me, they came across as biased publicizing their own apps, but who can blame them? They created this great informational tool and they wanted to reap the rewards from it. There are many free reputation management services out there that can get you started on managing your online reputation. These services will often help with local search marketing, online review management, and other crucial aspects of online reputation management. There are a variety of reasons for this, but one significant reason is likely due to an ongoing anti trust suit filed against Google. One of the issues was that Google places used reviews from Yelp, Tripadvisor, and other review sites which helped Google provide more value for the places product. But the bigger issue was when Google then started showing Google Places higher up in the rankings over these same sites they were pulling content from. In addition, the recent explosion in review generation on google directly is a contributing factor (“we don’t need your stinkin’ reviews!”). Not anymore anyway.

What does this mean for small and medium businesses? It makes life for SMBs and agencies a little more challenging because now they cannot track online reviews from Google Places alone. It is getting to the point that the web is becoming so saturated with review sites, blog sites and social media sites that it is hard to monitor them all. There is a greater need for a review monitoring service, especially to look for bad reviews. As a business owner, monitoring online reviews and chatter is very time-consuming if you have to go to log onto 20 or more sites to see if a new review or comment has been posted. You either need a team of people monitoring your online reputation or an online reputation management service like chatmeter.com.

An added concern that companies have had, is if their rankings are affected by this change? According to Mike Blumenthal, Will This Change my Rankings, this update to Google places was a surface update and does not actually affect company’s rankings. So, they are using the 3rd party reviews as references for Local SEO, just not showing them to consumers. Thus, it is still important to get regular reviews from a variety of sites to help you rank better and insure you have a strong presence and online reputation across the web. Chatmeter’s rank tracker will monitor your rankings for you as well. Rank Tracker

One more important aspect that Google still allows is to claim your local listing on Google Places. This is important because it lets the owner update the content on the page for accuracy, so the material on the page is accurate and represents your brand and service. Chatmeter helps identify this for agencies and franchises which may have hundreds of locations, so an automated solution is much more cost-effective. To learn more about our agency and enterprise solutions, click here. Agencies

As mentioned previously, everyday another blog, review site and social media site pops up making the web saturated with people’s opinions. This can be a huge threat if you’re not monitoring your reviews or simply ignoring them. Customer reviews are more valuable than ever (84% of consumers believe the reviews they read online). It takes a small investment, but can pay off significantly. Chatmeter is a simple, cost-effective way to help you manage your online reputation.

“It’s a bird”! “No, it’s a plane”! “No, it’s another Social Media site”! “What are we going to do with this”?! This may be what local businesses are saying about Google + when they heard about the new social media site. Google + is a modernized Facebook. It takes staying connected to an all new technological level. Between the group video chats, huddles, and the automatic picture uploads, Google+ could take social media to the next generation.

Of course, this isn’t Google’s first try into social, but this seems like they’re strongest effort and with many people reporting a little Facebook exhaustion as well as spam and advertising taking over, the timing may be right for the next social service. G+ (Google+) has some interesting new features and improved on some existing features that other social sites support. For example, G+ has circles, where you can categorize people into groups. I can put my grandma, dad and aunt all in the same “family circle,” and this means that they are not able to see the pictures that people in my “friend circle” post.

The next feature that G+ offers is “Hangouts,” which is combining social media with Skype. You can now have a video chat with one or more friends or even whole “circles”, all in the same place. One of my favorite and smartest features G+ offers is “sparks”. Sparks are what you “Like” on Facebook but with a Google twist. According to Mashable, when you add a “spark” to your profile, G+ will then stream personalized content to your profile based on +1’s, Google+ sharing activity, and the algorithm that fuels Google searches, all based on the chosen interest or spark.

The last element that G+ has to offer is “Huddles,” which allows mobile users to have group conversations with their circles via text. This is a huge deal with texting becoming so popular and being a big source of revenue for wireless carriers. The “huddles” feature now threatens that revenue stream for wireless carriers. Google+ seems like it could be the next big step in SMBs social media marketing, because it could be the next trend and google seems to have had the foresight to build in business friendly features. In a study just released by Roost, it was said that 84.1% of SMBs found that their Facebook page was a more effective way to advertise than paid advertising. This could hold true for G+ as well because of features like circles and places (if they really do integrated the two tools).

Google + will allow businesses, one interesting and unique feature, with circles, it will allow the organization to categorize its customers and will permit them to communicate to each group. So, you can have your “regulars” in one circle, occasional customers in another, first-time customers in another, and prospects in another. This allows you to create different marketing messages and promotions to each group, which is a huge benefit for marketers. However, it’s been rumored that Google + will automatically create a page for each of the 15 millions US businesses. This seems like the same disaster that Facebook places has caused with confusion and multiple pages for each business. SMBs can barely manage 1 page, much less have to deal with 2 pages.

Christian Oestlien, project manager for Google +, recently posted on You Tube that the + pages for businesses were going to integrate a lot of features that Google already offers like analytics and adwords. It sounds like Google+ could be the new platform for businesses to use all of their G-tools (Google Tools). If Google gets their tools organized and makes them easier for SMBs to use, then it could become a power house in local search marketing. With the integration of Google+, Google places and other tools, Google is going to be valuing, measuring, and encouraging the sharing of information and why not, Google is already monitoring all your search activity, so of course they’d like to know all the information that you are sharing with everyone you know!

That’s even more impactful when it comes to targeting. Of course, Google is already using customer feedback as component to establish trust for SMBs listings and sites with reviews. Thus, it’s pretty likely that they could now use customer input (sharing and sparking) to further establish trust and impact rankings as well. That would certainly get more businesses to jump on the Google+ train. So, is Google going to be successful getting SMBs to use Google+, or will it just be another Google product that falls flat in the SMB space? What do you think?
