Although there are many benefits to monitoring your national competition, national benchmarks do little for your individual locations. This is because your stores’ local competition may not be the same brands that you view as your national competition. For example, Pizza Hut may think Domino’s is their primary competitor. However, upon local competitor monitoring, they may discover that many of their stores are actually competing with a Papa John’s or more often, a local or regional pizza chain that comes up first in search results and has great reviews.
With the increasing impact of Local SEO - local reputation management has shifted from a national to local emphasis. Searchers are relying on online review and social media sites such as Yelp, Foursquare, Twitter, etc. to gather information about a company instead of going directly to their website.
A few months ago, we wrote about how Yelp is cracking down on paid reviews (check it out here) and that they were increasing their filtering service to try to deter companies from producing fake reviews. Now, along with the help of Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman, chatmeter would like to give some tips and advice on responding correctly to reviews. Responding to reviews can be an extremely helpful tactic if done correctly; but if done incorrectly, you may just be adding fuel to the fire. These tips should be directly incorporated into your review management strategy and referred to whenever you respond.

According to a new study, 7 out of 10 potential customers are more likely to buy from a local business when it makes information accessible through a social media site. This yearly study, which is called “Local Search Usage Study: Bridging The Gaps, From Search to Sales,” is a combined effort of TMP Directional Marketing and comScore. The study surveys 4,000 consumers online and contains data obtained by observing one million of those who allowed their online searches to be monitored anonymously.
