Pinterest just added location data to its current Place Pin service feature, with listings and reviews powered by Foursquare. With their extensive reach, this just became another key site for your business to monitor. As they continue to enhance their Place Pins with valuable and accurate business information, Pinterest gains momentum as a social media site that can drive awareness and traffic to your stores in the complex world of local search.

What is Pinterest?

If you aren’t already familiar with Pinterest, here’s a quick run-down. Essentially, Pinterest is a social networking site that serves as an online pin board. Users can create their own boards and visually share their interests, discoveries, videos and more. You can find DIY projects, recipes, fashion advice, workout tips, local businesses and the list goes on and on. In September of this year, the site announced it had reached 100 million active monthly users.

Place Pins

Pinterest actually first introduced Place Pins back in 2013 when they noticed that a large amount of users were pinning dream vacation destinations and creating travel boards that served as inspiration for upcoming vacations. “Pinners” were given the option to add a map to their board and pin locations onto it.

Enhanced Place Pins

Since Pinterest first introduced Place Pins, there has been over 7 billion created. This past October, the site announced that they would be adding new features to the Place Pins that make it even easier to identify and contact any location. The upgrade automatically added detailed information to Place Pins. Which basically means that there are over 7 billion locations on the site, as of October, with information such addresses, phone numbers and store hours. Customers can now find your business within Pinterest, as well as customer reviews and tips, from anywhere in the world. By clicking on the pin, “pinners” can access other Place Pins nearby using the map. They also made it easier to obtain directions and call the destination with one easy tap of a button on your smartphone or tablet.

How This Affects Your Business

Making it easier for people to access their desired destinations gives them more incentive to stay on Pinterest, versus simply viewing the information and then turning to another site like Google to get directions, bookmark and contact the location. Your local business can gain awareness, traffic and engagement through recently launched Buyable Pins and Promoted Pins, which are just like regular pins but you pay for them to be viewed by more people (think of it as paid search vs. organic).

Although the site has yet to become a full-fledged local search tool, enhanced Place Pins mean your business has yet another way for the public to uncover your business and the reviews and reputation that comes with it. Place Pins are powered by Foursquare, are you listed on their site? Are you listed on Pinterest? If you have negative reviews on Foursquare, then your reputation is likely not so good on Pinterest either. So how are your online reviews? The world of local search and review monitoring is complex and confusing. If you don’t have a tool to help you with this, you are behind the times. Reach out to Chatmeter!
